Current Account (goods, services, etc.) Deficits: Not a Problem?
(08/18/11)

Decide for yourself whether or not the “Free Trade” mantra has, as resolutely claimed by some economic and political factions, been such a good thing after all. When combined with fiscal follies this union is known as the “Twin Deficits.” And everyone just loves twins, right? Yes, the chanting has transformed us. Or is that transmogrified? As the analysis demonstrates, they do go hand-in-hand. Remarkably well.

Here’s the 25-year accumulation of Current Account deficits by country & region.
This is the sum of the deficits for calendar years 1985 through 2010.
Shown are selected countries sorted by decreasing accumulated deficit totals.

Seems to me the problem isn’t that we’ve been policing the world, but rather that we’ve been supporting it economically through a generosity much greater than we could afford. It all started with the Reagan Administration, and that must be what’s meant by Reaganomics. Right? Anyone have David Stockman’s email?

*****************************

If you’d like to browse a detailed 25-year history of how we got to where we are today, trade-wise that is, here are the yearly current account surpluses/(deficits) for all of our trading partners. . .with subtotals given for each country. Just click on a (+) sign to see an individual country’s history.
(08/19/11)

P.S. The progressive vertical misalignment of a (+) sign with the country name to which it applies is a result of a bug in Microsoft’s spreadsheet display software associated with “SkyDrive” where the files are stored. If you have Excel and download the file that problem disappears. Sorry ’bout that.

As Monty Python might say, “And now, for something completely different. . .”
